The Chemnitzer Athletenclub eV , Chemnitzer AC for short , is a sports club from Chemnitz , Saxony .

history

Early years

In 1888 the II. Chemnitz Athletes Club was founded from the I. Chemnitz Athletes Club, which among other things operated the disciplines of weightlifting , wrestling , lawn power sports and artistry . During the First World War , the club's operations were suspended, but were resumed shortly afterwards. In 1922, the Chemnitz AC took part in the workers', gymnastics and sports festival in Leipzig with a delegation for the first time. The association was also represented at the Workers' Olympiad in Frankfurt / Main two years later. In 1939, the club's athletes were accepted into the Wehrmacht . Remaining club members move into the new training facility in the Matthes dance hall a little later , before they settled down in the Stadtbad. From 1945 onwards, the control council directive No. 23 of December 17, 1945 prohibited the practice of martial arts in Chemnitz. Between 1945 and 1947 members of the association reorganized and brought together hidden training equipment again during the war.

GDR time

In 1947 the North Chemnitz Sports Association was founded and organized sports operations were resumed. In 1948, a district committee for physical culture and sport with the weightlifting specialist group was established in Chemnitz . In 1949 Chemnitz-Nord is included in the BSG Fewa Chemnitz . Herbert Svejkovsky , who became a member in 1928 , became Saxony champion in the same year. Two years later, BSG Fewa becomes BSG Chemie Chemnitz . In 1953 the association became the BSG Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt , after Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt. A year later there was the first international match against Romania, in which the GDR delegation was supervised by the chairman of the weightlifting section, Herbert Svejkovsky. From 1957 the club member Werner Arnold ensures international placements and successes. In 1961 all athletes are accepted into the SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt . There Svejkovsky takes over the full-time coaching position. In 1963 the club merged with SC Wismut to form SC Karl-Marx-Stadt . As a result, athletes are internationally successful several times. In 1988 Joachim Kunz won the gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics .

After reunification

With German reunification and the dissolution of the weightlifting association in the GDR, the club was renamed the Chemnitz Sports Club again. From 1991 the club started in the East German Bundesliga. On December 14, 1992 it was re-established as Chemnitzer AC . From the beginning of the following year, the club starts under this name and club member Marc Huster won silver at the World Cup in Melbourne . From 1994 the club started in the Bundesliga season south. In 1997 the association had 300 members for the first time. In 2005 the club won bronze in the Bundesliga, a year later silver. In 2007 they again celebrated winning the bronze medal and in 2008 silver. In the same year, club member Matthias Steiner wins gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . In 2009 the club became German team champion for the third time and defended the title in 2010 and, after bronze in 2011, won it again in 2012. In 2013, the Chemnitz AC received the award “ Green Ribbon for exemplary promotion of talent in the club ” for its work with young talent from the German Olympic Sports Confederation . In 2016 the club won silver again at the team championships.
