Career

Werner Arnold, who was born in Saxony, grew up in his birthplace and learned the saddlery trade. As a strong young man he turned to weightlifting and started doing this sport at the BSG "Chemie" Chemnitz . There, under the direction of Herbert Svejkovski, a successful weightlifting center had formed. Later he also started for BSG Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt and SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt. Werner Arnold soon saw his first successes. In 1953 he took second place in the heavyweight division of the German youth championships, which were then still held all over Germany, and in 1954 he became all-German junior champion. In the course of his career he also came to some international assignments. In 1960 he represented Germany at the Olympic Games in Rome . In 1964 he failed in the Olympic qualification due to three invalid attempts in pressing. After 1955, the central German athletes only started at the GDR championships.
