Dance with a murderer (original title: Dance Me Outside ) is a Canadian film by director Bruce McDonald from 1994. The drama based on the book of the same name by William Patrick Kinsella revolves around the lives of young Indians on the reservation.
action
The friends Silas and Frank live on an Indian reservation and are interested in an apprenticeship as a car mechanic, but are unsure about their applications and waste their time. A visit from Silas' sister Illianna and her white husband Robert, with whom they joke, brings a change in their lives. Tension builds when Gooch, Illianna's former boyfriend, is released from prison. This threatens to be violently discharged when Silas, Frank and Gooch, together with other friends from the reservation, clash with white racists at a party on the weekend. Dissatisfied with Silas' way of life, his girlfriend Sadie separates from him. After the festival, the girl Little Margaret is found murdered and the white racist Clarence is sentenced to only two years in prison for manslaughter. Sadie and others take legal action to get Clarence more punished. When Clarence is released after a year, Silas and Frank want to commit blood revenge together with others, but are subtly prevented from doing so by their friends. To avoid a long prison sentence for their friends, they kill Clarence themselves. The police, who only suspect male Indians, can therefore not prove anybody's murder. Silas, who is reconciled with Sadie, and Frank can begin an apprenticeship as a mechanic.

criticism
“The film depicts two eventful weekends in the Indian reservation of Lake Kidabanesee. There is a year between these weekends. "
“Although the film seriously addresses the problems of the indigenous people, it captivates with abrupt changes in pace and atmosphere. A road movie full of wit and charm that is carried by the playful mood of the young actors and ironicizes Indian and white prejudices. "
“A contradicting group portrait emerges beyond folkloric romanticism or poverty stereotypes. Especially because of the lively main actors, 'Dance me outside' manages to walk the fine line between teenage comedy and socially critical crime thriller. "
"Canadian director Bruce McDonald ('Highway 61') peppered his rough, solid ballad of growing up with a lot of realistic flair and a feel for the involuntary joke of everyday life."
“Adaptation of the novel by WP Kinsella, realized with a lot of empathy, in which director Bruce McDonald addresses both Indian and white prejudices and at the same time ironizes them. Despite the seriousness of its approach, this road movie has enough humor and charm to entertain a wider audience. The young leading actors Ryan Black and Adam Beach, who convince with their wit, also play a major role. A worth seeing image of Indian life today. "
