The Opposite of Sex (Original title: The Opposite of Sex ) is an American comedy film from 1998. The director was Don Roos , who also wrote the screenplay . The main roles were played by Christina Ricci and Martin Donovan .

The youngster Dede Truitt ( Christina Ricci ) moves in with her homosexual half-brother Bill after the funeral of her stepfather. Bill is close friends with his late lover's sister, Lucia DeLury ( Lisa Kudrow ). Dede teases his lover Matt Mateo from her brother and tells Matt he is pregnant. In reality, the child is from Dede's ex-lover, Randy Cates.
Dede leaves Bill, but comes back after giving birth to her child. Matt finds another relationship, Lucia DeLury marries Carl Tippett. In the end, Dede cynically says that sex is the opposite of what people should want.
Reviews
James Berardinelli described the film as one of the most "consistently" amusing comedies of 1998. He praised the dialogues and the "unconventional" style of the film. Berardinelli noted that the second half of the film broached some more serious issues.
Roger Ebert described the film in the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper on June 19, 1998 as "refreshing" and in places "very amusing".
The film was described as "amusing" on www.prisma-online.de , and the actors received praise.
Awards
Christina Ricci was nominated for the Film Award Golden Globe Award nomination. She was also nominated for the American Comedy Award , the Chlotrudis Award, and the Independent Spirit Award . She won the Golden Satellite Award , the YoungStar Award , the Golden Space Needle Award from the Seattle International Film Festival , the National Board of Review Award, and the Florida Film Critics Circle Award .
Lisa Kudrow won the Chlotrudis Award and the New York Film Critics Circle Award . She has been nominated for the American Comedy Award , the Independent Spirit Award , the Chicago Film Critics Association Award , the Online Film Critics Society Award, and the Teen Choice Award .
Don Roos won the Independent Spirit Award as both a director and a screenwriter. He also won the PEN Center USA West Literary Award and was nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award as well as the Deauville Film Festival Special Award.
The film was nominated for the Artios Award of the Casting Society of America and for a GLAAD Media Award .
