Arnar Gunnlaugsson (born March 6, 1973 in Akranes ) is a former Icelandic football player and current football coach . His twin brother Bjarki Gunnlaugsson is also a professional soccer player.

Player career

Arnar Gunnlaugsson started playing football for the Icelandic club ÍA Akranes . After a good season in the first team, the Dutch first division club Feyenoord Rotterdam noticed him. After a few short stints in Holland, he moved in 1994 together with his twin brother Bjarki on loan to Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Nürnberg . While the club stayed in the 2nd Bundesliga only thanks to the license withdrawal for Dynamo Dresden , Arnar Gunnlaugsson made some promising appearances. With eight goals he was 1. FC Nürnberg's top scorer that season. After the season Arnar returned to his home club in Akranes.

In 1997 he made the leap into the English Premier League to the Bolton Wanderers . However, he remained without a hit and could not avoid the descent of the Wanderers. In the following season in the First Division, however, he flourished and scored 13 hits in 27 missions. Leicester City then brought him back to the Premier League for £ 2,000,000 . He stayed there until 2002, but did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player. Finally, he moved to Stoke City on a free transfer , where he had already been loaned briefly in 1999/2000.

After a brief assignment in Scotland with Dundee United , he returned to Iceland in 2003 and played for KR Reykjavík until 2006 . Since then he has been switching between various top division clubs, some of which he also works as co- or head coach.

National team

Arnar Gunnlaugsson made his debut for the Icelandic national team in April 1993 during a friendly against the USA . In total, he came to 32 missions in the national team, in which he scored 3 goals. His last appearance in the national jersey was in April 2003 in a friendly against Finland .

Coaching career

So far, he has held the coaching post of his home club ÍA twice . He is currently both a player and assistant coach at Haukar .
