action
The lovely waitress Jenna is trapped in an unhappy marriage to the egomaniac, choleric, and tyrannical Earl. Together with her two colleagues and best friends, Becky and Dawn, she works in a mediocre diner in a southern coffee shop in the United States, where she only finds fulfillment by baking cakes ( pies ) of imaginative and unique creations that delight customers. An unwanted pregnancy, which she cannot be happy about, makes her want to escape her dreary everyday life, leave her husband and start a new life. In addition, she has been saving money for a long time and is also hoping to win the $ 25,000 for first place in a cake baking competition.
In this situation, she throws herself into a stormy affair with her new gynecologist Jim Pomatter. From then on she is torn between the feelings she feels about Jim and acts out, and her moral principles, which actually forbid her as a married woman to have such a relationship with a married man. Jenna also tries to always be friendly and correct to her fellow human beings. She is the only friend of the rich and grumpy owner of Joe's Pie Diner , Old Joe, and she also has nice words for her always harsh direct superior Cal.
But her relationship with Jim doesn't really offer her a way out because he's married and probably won't leave his wife. Jenna also has to bury the hope of winning the competition because Earl won't let her leave. So it happens that Jenna only finds the courage to start a new life without Earl after giving birth to the sight of her daughter Lulu. She also gives the affair with Jim a pass, although she agrees that Old Joe gives her a lot of money before a major operation. Jenna is now financially independent and opens her own restaurant Lulus pies .
Reviews
“Behavioral-melancholy comedy about the self-discovery of a sarcastic-stoic woman, to which charming supporting characters are placed. Convincingly played, entertaining through a lot of dialogue, even if the comedic recipe doesn't quite work. "
