action

New York City : Seth Davis drops out of college at Queens College to run an illegal casino in his apartment. Seth has a tense relationship with his father, the judge Marty Davis, especially when he learns about his son's casino. To impress his father, he follows a friend's advice and takes on a position as a stockbroker in the financial company JT Marlin, which makes above-average profits. The atmosphere of the company is characterized by unrestrained greed but also by camaraderie between the brokers. Davis falls in love with the attractive secretary, whom his boss also has an eye on.

Davis initially works there as an assistant to a broker, but soon rises in the company hierarchy and becomes a broker himself. First he wonders why young brokers can make fairytale profits and how it is possible that he earns more than the established brokerage firms. He doesn't get any answers to these questions from the bosses. In the course of his career, however, he learns that the company is using illegal methods. As part of cold calling , stocks for fictitious companies are sold to investors who are then cheated of their money. The company also works according to the pump-and-dump scheme : company shares in companies in which JT Martin himself holds a large proportion of the shares are bought and the share price artificially increased. JT Martin then sells the shares at a high price and the share price plummets. As a result, investors lose the majority of their investments.

In order to close a particularly large - and illegal - deal, he asks his father for help. He reluctantly agrees and is arrested a little later by the FBI , which has been monitoring the activities of JT Marlin for some time. To protect his father from charge, Davis works with the FBI and hands them incriminating material about the company's work.

The FBI arrests all JT Marlin employees except Seth.

reception

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of February 18, 2000 that the film looked like real life, which was observed at close range ("The movie has the high-octane feel of real life, closely observed"). One of his strongest points is the tension-laden relationship between Seth Davis and his father. The representations are good. Ebert criticized the ending, which seemed "artificial"; he certified the film, however, "suspense" and the ability to captivate the audience.

Emanuel Levy wrote in the magazine Variety that the "naive philosophy" presented was disappointing.

The Lexicon of International Films wrote, Risk - The Fastest Path to Wealth is a "handsome debut film". He tries "to deal with the phenomenon of the booming stock business and especially its darker side" and shows "immature people who earn money as unscrupulous as they are for their own sake".

Awards

Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Affleck were nominated for the Teen Choice Award in 2000. The film was nominated for the British Independent Film Award in 2000 for Best Foreign English Language Film .
