American Heist is an American action film from the year 2014 . Directed by the Armenian director Sarik Andreasyan , the script was written by Raul Inglis . The film is loosely based on the 1959 film Rififi in St. Louis (originally The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery ), but is set in New Orleans. It premiered on September 11, 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival . In Germany, the film was released directly on DVD and Blu-ray on September 8, 2015 .

James Kelly is indebted to his older brother Frankie Kelly, who took the main guilt for a crime committed together. So while James was only in jail for 16 months, Frankie spent 10 years there. When Frankie is released from prison, James has got his life under control and works as an auto mechanic and is about to start a relationship with the New Orleans police operator Emily. Frankie, destitute and unemployed, urges James to commit one last big crime together with other criminals: robbing a bank. A lot of things go wrong.

The film service believes that American Heist is a “solid thriller” that “almost completely dispenses with the genre-typical action” and “concentrates on the explosive brother tragedy”. It is also said that the main actors succeed in "making impressive impressions of two loser personalities, whose decline into criminality also reflects the failure of American promises of success".
