Neal Cassady worked as a machinist for the Tire Yard company in the 1940s ; Harry is his best friend. Cassady dreams of a middle-class life. His girlfriend, Joan, attempts suicide in 1947. Thereupon Cassady leaves her hometown and moves through the country.
He succumbs to alcohol and enjoys the benefits of freedom with many different sex partners. He happens to meet Joan again and thinks about getting back together with her. However, he decides against his earlier dream of civil life and moves on.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a " successful debut film with great actor performances ". It shows the " inner turmoil between bourgeois longings, a boisterous urge for freedom and the permanent search for ecstasy " by Neal Cassady .
Jon Niccum wrote in Lawrence Journal-World that the film was " excruciatingly boring ".
Ian Waldron-Mantgani wrote in The UK Critic that the film was a loose, confusing collection of stories . He could work on " big fans " of Cassady, to whom Stephen T. Kay also seems to belong. The female characters would appear undifferentiated. The actors - including Keanu Reeves - are " talented ".
