Darnell Martin (born January 7, 1964 in Bronx , New York City , New York ) is an American director and screenwriter .

Life

Darnell Martin was born in the Bronx , New York . She attended Sarah Lawrence College and graduated from New York University Film School. In 1992 she made her first short film Suspect . In 1994 she became the first African American woman to direct and produce a film for a major studio . The romantic comedy Life Is Trouble was created for Columbia Pictures . Darnell Martin also wrote the script for this film. Besides her work for the cinema Darnell Martin also led directing for television series such as Oz - Big House , Emergency Room - The emergency room , Criminal Intent - Criminal Intent , Law & Order and Gray's Anatomy . 2008 directed and wrote the screenplay for the film Cadillac Records , which tells the story of the record label Chess Records . Since then she has worked primarily as a director on television series such as Gossip Girl , Happy Town and The Mentalist .
