Etta James Rocks the House is a live album by the singer Etta James , which was released in 1964 on Argo , a sub-label of Chess Records . It contains recordings made over two days in late September 1963 at the New Era Club in Nashville , Tennessee . It remained the only live album that James released during her time with Chess Records.

In contrast to the studio recordings, which were recorded rather gently and romantically with violin-laden arrangements, the live recordings of the album were supposed to show Etta James as a rough and fiery blues singer, which worked well. The only time the band slowed down was Etta James own track All I Could Do Is Cry , but what is saved in tempo is added in emotional intensity.

In addition to their own numbers, the album includes some cover versions ( What'd I Say, Sweet Little Angel, Money, Ooh Poo Pah Doo ). The CD reissue includes three previously unreleased tracks ( Ain't That Lovin 'You Baby, All I Could Do Was Cry, I Just Want to Make Love to You ). Also noteworthy are the solos by guitarist David Walker.

The album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2008.
