The Chess Box is a compilation album by Etta James released by MCA / Chess in 2000 . The album contains a cross-section of the work of Etta James during the time she was under contract with Chess Records: (1960 to 1974). In addition to their hits, the box also contains previously unreleased material.

General

Etta James is one of the most outstanding singers of the second half of the 20th century. And she earned this fame mainly during the time she was under contract with Chess Records. Hence, it is noticeable that when the record company released boxing with the works of their best artists in the early 1990s, Etta James was not among them. Critic Stephen Erlewine was upset:

"It's a shame it didn't come out with the first round of Chess Boxes, but it was worth the wait."

"It's a shame she didn't come out with the first chess boxes, but it was worth the wait."

The box is provided with a 40-page booklet that contains a large number of pictures. The accompanying text is from Esmond Edwards, who was still working with the artist as Vice President of Chess Records from 1970. The photos are from Esmond Edwards , Michael Ochs and Jason Pastori.

Criticism

  • AMG Stephen Erlewine: Collectors may find a favorite side missing, but the great majority of her best work for Argo, Cadet, and Chess is here. (Collectors may miss some favorite recordings, but most of their best work is for Argo, Cadet, and Chess here.)
  • Amazon Editorial Review Genevieve William: ... this is a very strong collection and an admirable effort to get the best of Etta all in one place. (... that is a very strong collection and an admirable effort to bring together the best of Etta James in one place.)
