Roman mines

The gold mining in Wales has been used since Roman times operated. In Wales , gold was mined in prehistoric times because it was easy to remove from the rock. Unlike South African gold, which is heavily mixed with rock and income of a quarter of an ounce each ton of supplies, the more pure Welsh Gold provides up to 30 ounces per ton. To torc processed gold jewelry is since the La Tene time worn.

The Welsh gold deposits lie in a wide strip on the west side of Barmouth in Gwynedd via Dolgellau in Snowdonia to Dyfed . At Llanbedr in Gwynedd are the “Roman Steps”, a path with stone stairs that lead into the mountains to the old gold mine of Bony Dhu.

There are three gold mines in Wales today.

  • Dolaucothi gold mines , near Pumpsaint in Dyfed, operated by the National Trust, can be visited. The mine was operated by the Romans, but was abandoned for centuries. The new operation in the 19th century lasted until the closure in 1938.
  • Gwynfynydd gold mines in Dolgellau began operating in the 1860s and have proven to be one of the richest gold mines in Britain. The gold mine was restored after being inactive for a period and has been back in production ever since. It has delivered more than 2000 ounces of fine gold per year since 1884. Visitors are given the opportunity to tour the gold mine.
  • Clogau Gold Mine at Bontddu , near Barmouth, is an operating gold mine that is not open to the public.
