Baron Kilkeel , of Kilkeel in the County of Down , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was created by Letters patent on July 16, 2018 by Queen Elizabeth II for her grandson Prince Harry as a subordinate title to the titles Duke of Sussex and Earl of Dumbarton , which were awarded to him at the same time . The award ceremony took place on the occasion of his wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018. He is named after the Northern Irish city ​​of Kilkeel . Traditionally, male members of the British royal family are given a title of nobility on the occasion of their marriage.

Historical reference

Before 2018 there was no title of nobility associated with Kilkeel. In the Middle Ages it was the center of the Mugdorna (Múrna, Mughdorna, Morne), a Gaelic-Irish tribe. Kilkeel is located near the Morne Mountains and is the base of Northern Ireland's largest fishing fleet. The barony was created for Prince Harry as his Northern Irish title, to give him a title from every part of the country. The Queen chose the title.
