Kilkeel ( Irish Cill Chaoil ) is a small town and a civil parish (lowest municipal administrative units) in historic County Down in Northern Ireland . The city belonged to the disbanded District Newry and Morne and has been part of the District Newry, Morne and Down since 2015 . It is the southernmost city in Northern Ireland and is in the historic Barony of Morne. It has 6521 inhabitants (as of 2011) and an area of 3.1 km².

Kilkeel is the main fishing port on the Down Coast. The port is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in Ireland. In the town there are the ruins of a church and a fortress from the 14th century. The place is namesake for the title Baron Kilkeel of Harry, Duke of Sussex . This title was launched on May 19, 2018 by Queen Elizabeth II as a substantial title for her grandson Prince Harry on the occasion of his wedding to Meghan Markle and is named after the city of Kilkeel. The full title and designation of the barony are "Baron Kilkeel, of Kilkeel in County Down".

geography

The town of Kilkeel is located on a plain south of the Morne Mountains and west of the Kilkeel River, which flows south into the North Canal. The city is in the district of Magheramurphy and extends into the neighboring townlands of Derryoge, Drumcro and Dunnaman.

There are a total of 69 townlands in Civil parish Kilkeel.

history

Kilkeel takes its name from the old church (translated: "Church of the narrow square"), which towers over the city and built in 1388 above the city and named after St. Colman "St. Colman Del Morne ”. There is evidence of Kilkeel as a Christian settlement as early as the 11th century. In the grounds of the church there is an illegible, equal-armed medieval cross that stands next to a granite pedestal that was traditionally used as a wart well to heal warts. A detailed historical description of the tradition, folklore and structure of the church and the surrounding cemetery can be found on the cemetery notice boards. This was used for burials until 1916. The last burials in the cemetery were victims of a collision between two steamers, the "Retriever" and the "SS Connemara" in Carlingford Lough.

On May 30, 1918, a fleet of Kilkeel fishing boats was sunk by the UB-64 submarine under the command of Otto von Schrader . The sunken boats that lay 12 miles off the coast of County Down included the Jane Gordon, Cyprus, Never Can Tell, St. Mary ”,“ Sparkling Wave ”,“ Lloyds ”,“ Marianne Macrum ”and the motor ship“ Honey Bee ”. Only two boats, "Moss Rose" and "Mary Joseph", were not sunk and the crews returned to port on those ships. The Mary Joseph (N55) is now in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.

Legend has it that the serial killer William Hare died in Kilkeel in 1829, but this has not been proven for certain.

Attractions

On a small dirt road at the end of the village is the Crawtree Stone , a portal tomb integrated into a field wall , which dates from the Neolithic Age .

economy

Fishing is an important industry in Kilkeel. Kilkeel Harbor is the home port of Northern Ireland's largest fishing fleet. There are fish processing factories around the port and a lobster farm along the coast. Founded in 1996, Whitewater Brewery brews and sells Belfast Ale. In recent years, "Collins Aerospace" (formerly BE Aerospace) has become the largest employer in the region. The Kilkeel plant, which manufactures aircraft seats for a global customer base, employs over 800 people.

sport and freetime

Popular sports in the Kilkeel area include soccer, hockey, Gaelic soccer, fishing, golf, hurling and swimming.

There are five Gaelic Athletic Association clubs in the area , including An Ríocht, Longstone, Atticall, Ballymartin and Glasdrumman. Each club has impressive facilities including playing fields, sports halls, fitness suites, bar facilities and a wide range of off-site activities. These include youth clubs, mens sheds (retirees), walking clubs, yoga, basketball, and many more. All five teams are strongly represented in the Down GAA calendar by the various leagues and field teams in all age groups from U6 to senior.

One of the most famous sports teams in town is the “Kilkeel Hockey Club”, which has three men's teams and two women's teams.

The oldest football team is “Valley Rangers FC” from the Mid-Ulster Football League. Other local teams are Ballyvea, Kilkeel, Kilkeel Athletic and the Morne Rovers. With the exception of Kilkeel Athletic, the local football clubs play in the SK Holmes Newcastle League.

There are two local golf courses, Kilkeel Golf Course and Cranfield Pitch and Putt.

There are opportunities for fishing in front of the piers at the harbor.
