Egaleo ( modern Greek Αιγάλεω , ancient Greek Αἰγάλεως Aigaleos , Latin Aegaleus ), also Aigaleo , is a mountain range in Greece . The northeastern part (northeast of the crossing by Highway 8 at Dafni ) is also called Pikilo ( Greek Ποικίλο Poikilo ).

location

The Egaleo is located west of the Greek capital Athens , southeast of Eleusis , east of the island of Salamis and northwest of Piraeus .

The areas around the mountain range are mostly densely populated. At its feet, Perama , Keratsini and Nikea are lined up as suburbs of Piraeus in the south, the Athens suburbs Korydallos , Agia Varvara , Egaleo , Chaidari , Peristeri , Petroupoli and Kamatero in the east, Zephyri , Ano Liosia and Fyli in the north ; only on the northwest flank east of the refineries of Skaramanga in the area of Aspropyrgos is there not only industrial agglomerations but also undeveloped areas.

character

The limestone mountain range is predominantly rocky, and in the northern area where the Daphni monastery is located, it is also forested. In the southwest the mountain range reaches almost as far as the coast of the Bay of Salamis.

The Persian king Xerxes is said to have watched the battle of Salamis from Aigaleos with a view of the bay of Salamis . In ancient times, the Aigaleos was partly in the area of the Demos Kolonos .

The Egaleo gave its name to the Egaleo municipality at its foot , the Egaleo AO Athens football club and the "Egaleo-Ring" bypass motorway ( GR-A65 ).

traffic

In the southern area the ridge is crossed on the route of the ancient " Holy Road " ( Greek Ιερά Οδός , Iera Odos ) by the highway 8 at Daphni Monastery , which connects Athens with Patras as an extension of the "Athinon Boulevard". In the north runs the Autobahn 6 "Attiki Odos". Highway 65 “Egaleo-Ring”, which connects Piraeus to Attiki Odos, runs along the western flank ; the connection to the GR-A8 is not yet fully developed.
