The Pendeli ( Neugriechisch Πεντέλη , transcribed also Penteli ; ancient Greek Πεντελικὸν ὄρος Pentelicon Oros or Βριλησσός Brilēssos or Βριληττός Brilēttos ) is a cone-shaped, steeply inclined on all sides mountain of 1108 m northeast of Athens , and the second highest peak in attic .

The name is originally derived from the ancient Demos Pentele.

The mountain is internationally famous for its white Pentelic marble , which was also used for the construction of the Athens Acropolis .

"For a long time to come, Apollo will let the summer be blue,
and Pendeli's marble will shine."

- Lord Byron , from " Childe Harold's Pilgrimage ", German by Adolf Böttger

Today's slight discoloration of this marble on ancient buildings into yellowish beige / sand-colored does not correspond to the original white color, but rather developed over the centuries as a result of the weather.

A road leads from Athens' suburbs Nea Pendeli or Kifissia past the Moni Pendelis monastery and abandoned quarries to the summit, which houses a telecommunications station. A recommended hiking trail starts in the north at the summer resort Dionysus. On bright days the view stretches from the summit to the north to Mount Olympus and to the south to the Cretan Ida Mountains (Peter Goeßler in Preußische Jahrbücher 119 (1905), p. 453).

The Attic community Pendeli is named after the mountain .
