Filothei ( Greek Φιλοθέη ( f. Sg. )) Is a northeastern suburb of Athens in Greece .

history

The formerly agricultural area was acquired by the Greeks of Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century in order to found the village of Nea Alexandria there. After this project failed, in 1920 the administration of the National Bank of Greece decided to use part of this area to build apartments for their employees. In 1922, the remaining part was expropriated in order to be able to cover the housing needs of the refugees from Asia Minor. In 1934 the area was spun off from the municipality of Chalandri and initially a rural community (kinotita) was founded under the name Nea Alexandria . In 1936 it was renamed Filothei because the crypt of St. Philothea of Athens was discovered during the quarrying of stone for housing . In 1982 it was upgraded to a municipality (dimos) .

On January 1, 2011, Filothei was merged with Neo Psychiko and Psychiko to form the new Filothei-Psychiko community , in which it has since formed a district.

location

Filothei is about eight kilometers northeast of the Acropolis , a little south of Attiki Odos and the Olympic sports complex . It borders Nea Ionia and Marousi to the north, Chalandri to the east, Psychiko to the south and Galatsi to the west . It is bordered to the west by Kifissias Boulevard, separated from Psychiko by parks and green spaces in the south, and Filothei Hill (already part of Galatsi) to the west.

character

Filothei is less densely built up and populated than most of Athens' suburbs. The development, which, unlike in many suburbs of Athens, was built in an orderly manner due to a well thought-out urban planning, is loosened up by green spaces. 28,000 trees were planted at the facility in the 1930s. Filothei is bordered by green hills to the south and west. The greening is favored by the abundance of water in the area; a river called Podonifti, which is fed by springs on the Penteli and also carries water in summer, runs through the quiet place, which is called the “garden city of Athens”. For a long time it was a typical residential area for the middle class, for employees and journalists, but it became one of the preferred and more expensive suburbs in northern Athens. From the green Platia Drosopoulou, named after a former director of the National Bank of Greece, streets radiate in all directions.

Apart from the crypt and church of St. Philothea, Filothei has no special sights, but a popular open-air cinema.
