Districts of Athens
The districts of Athens , the Gitonies (neighborhoods), are often relatively small districts with their own infrastructure.
Gitonies each have their own shopping centers with shops of all kinds in streets, squares or in stoas (passages). There are almost always several periptera (kiosks), mostly on the roadside , which are often information centers for the residents (in addition to the shops) about the news of Gitonia . The Gitonia is for residents a clearer district, here knows "everyone every" and here you can feel at home and at home. This connection between the people of a district has meant that Athens and its suburbs (Greater Athens) can do almost without the usual big city slums of cities of this size.
Administratively, the municipality of Athens is divided into seven municipalities (δημοτική κοινότητα, dimotiki kinotita ) and 91 Gitonies:
- 1. The city center with the so-called business triangle (Stadiou Street, Omonia Square , Aiolou Street, Central Market ), the old town (Monastiraki, Psyrri, Plaka ), the districts south of the Acropolis (Koukaki, Makrygianni) and the government district around Syntagma Square and the Kolonaki and Exarchia areas.

- 3. The southwest ( Observatory , Petralona , Metaxourgio , Thisio )
- 4. The west with Kolonos , Akadimia Platonos , Sepolia to Patisia
- 5. The northwest to Probona
- 6. The area north of the center (Patisia, Kypseli)
- 7. The Northeast (Ambelokipi, Erythros, Polygono)
