Peristeri ( Greek Περιστέρι ( n. Sg. ); Older also Peristerio and Peristerion ) is the most populous suburb of the Greek capital Athens . As an independent municipality with 139,000 inhabitants, Peristeri is the sixth largest city in Greece.
location
Peristeri is about 5 kilometers northwest of the Acropolis. It borders on the city of Athens to the east, Petroupoli and Ilio to the north, Agii Anargyri to the northeast , Chaidari to the west and Egaleo to the south . The municipality borders on the Kifisos , the Athinon avenue, the national road 8 and GR-EO8a and includes the northern half of the Athens industrial area . The main streets are Kennedy Street and Thívon Street.
Peristeri has been on the Athens metro network since the 2004 Olympics , which has resulted in a significant rise in property prices. The traffic connection suggests that Peristeri will increasingly develop into a commuter residence. Due to its relatively central location, Peristeri is currently a residential area (center) as well as an industrial and service location.
Sports
Sport plays an important role in Peristeri. During the 2004 Olympic Games , Peristeri was the venue for the boxing competitions. More recently, the traditional club Atromitos ( Greek Ατρόμητος ) made a name for itself, which returned to the Super League for the 2009/10 season after relegation to the second division in 2008 . Peristeri is also home to the Athens Peristeri basketball club, which plays in the Greek first division ( A1 Ethniki ).
