The Ethniki Odos 8a / Εθνική Οδός 8a ( Greek for 'national road 8a') is a trunk road in Greece running between Athens and the port city of Patras in the northwest of the Peloponnese . In its course it represents the European roads E 94 , E 65 , E 55. Since the beginning of the 21st century it has been gradually replaced by Autobahn 8 .

course

National road 8a (with Athens-Corinth railway line) at Kakia Skala, Attica.
Exit Corinth of Autobahn 8

The national road 8a ( E 94 , E 65 , E 55 ) connects Athens with the port city of Patras in the northwest of the Peloponnese . The EO 8a is the first expansion stage to replace the national road 8 (EO 8) with a de facto identical route and route .

The national road 8a leaves Athens in a westerly direction at the level of the Dafni monastery and runs along the coast first to Elefsina , passes the city in its north (offshore), and then meets the motorway 6 (A6, Attiki Odos ) in the west of Elefsina . The further route along the coast leads the EO 8a or A8 first via Nea Peramos to Megara , which is bypassed in the south near the coast. Between Megara and Kineta, the EO 8a or A8 passes the cliff section of Kakia Skala , where two tunnels were built as part of the expansion to the A8. After the passage from Kakia Skala, the EO 8a or A8 continues on the coast of the Saronic Gulf to Loutraki on the eastern approach of the Corinth Canal .

The Corinth Canal is crossed in a bridge, with the EO 8a or A8 already running towards Corinth on the Gulf of Corinth . Corinth is bypassed in an arch in the south of the city. In the west of Corinth, near ancient Corinth, the Autobahn 7 branches off from EO 8a and A8 to Tripoli and Kalamata . After this junction (motorway triangle) the development status ends as Autobahn 8 (A8).

The GR-EO8a is oriented from the west of Corinth on the south coast of the Gulf of Corinth to the west towards Patras . In the further course, the EO 8a always follows the coast to the Strait of Rio (-Andirrio). In contrast to the old route of the EO 8, the EO 8a runs in a more straight line and does not cross any urban areas until Vernadaikia.

From Vernadaikia, the EO 8a is again designed as Autobahn 8 and has a junction with the EO 5 ( E 55 ), which connects the west coast of Greece to the Ionian Sea via the Rio-Andirrio Bridge . After the Rio-Andirrio Bridge, the EO 8a runs in a south-westerly direction directly to the east of the city of Patras . As EO 8 and EO 8a the road leads directly to Patras in the city center; as motorway 8 , Patras is bypassed in an arc from northeast to southwest until it meets national road 9 (EO 9), which brings you to the west coast of the Peloponnese .

The EO 8a ( E 94 , E 65 , E 55 ) passes and affects the following cities and metropolitan areas :

Coverage with European roads

The following sections of EO 8a are European roads:

Expansion status

Large sections of the EO 8a have meanwhile been upgraded to Autobahn 8 (A8). These are:

These sections are developed with 2 directional lanes (each directional lane with at least 2 lanes and a hard shoulder). Between Athens and Elefsina each lane has 3 lanes and 1 hard shoulder.

In the remaining sections of the route (with the exception of Athens), the EO 8a has been developed as a 2-lane road with oncoming traffic and 1 hard shoulder per lane. The junctions are free of intersections, mostly with two-way lanes and a median similar to a motorway.

Networking road

The following road connections are crossed by the EO 8a:

Networking air traffic

The following international airports in Greece are located on EO 8a:

  • Athens (via A6)
  • Araxos (Patras Airport) via EO 9
