Kurt Martens (born July 21, 1870 in Leipzig , † February 16, 1945 in Dresden ) was a German writer . He has mainly written novels and short stories .

Life

Martens was the cousin of the publisher Hans von Weber . He studied law, political science and history in Heidelberg , Leipzig and Berlin and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. In 1892 his first publication appeared, the volume of short stories Sinkende Schwimmer . From 1895 he was a freelance writer. In 1898 he moved to Munich and was on friendly terms with Thomas Mann , with whom he also exchanged a lot of letters. In the summer of 1903 Martens told his friend, husband, a "casino story" that he had witnessed during his military service in a hussar regiment. He noted down some key words and used them in November 1903 when writing his story Ein Glück . Martens became famous in 1898 through the novel from Décadence .

After the air raids on Dresden , Martens committed suicide and was buried in the Loschwitz cemetery . One of the two trombone angels created by the Gmund sculptor Quirin Roth on the organ of the Dresden Frauenkirche is dedicated to Kurt Martens, the other to Victor Klemperer .
