Nikos Ikonomou ( Greek Νίκος Οικονόμου ; born February 19, 1973 in Nikea ) is a former Greek basketball player and current basketball coach .

Player career

Club career

Nikos Ikonomou's career began in his hometown of Nikea when he signed his first professional contract with Ionikos Nikea. In the following three years the player knew how to convince and became a rising star in Greek basketball. At the age of just 18, the 2.08 m tall forward was offered a contract by Greek record champions Panathinaikos Athens . The following years were to be the most successful of his career. In addition to national championships and cup successes, he won the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup with Panathinaikos . Ikonomou was now at the height of his career and for many basketball experts it was only a matter of time before he would move to the NBA . However, the player could not live up to these high expectations in the period that followed. Ikonomou changed his team every year without being able to gain a foothold or win a title. Ikonomou ended his active career in 2007 after 371 first division appearances at Panellinios Athens .

National team career

With the Greek national team Ikonomou counts 109 participations, in which he got a total of 1,156 points (10.61 on average). With Greece, Ikonomou took part in three European and one world championships, as well as the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Coaching career

Ikonomou's career as a coach began in 2008 with the amateur club Spaton. In the same year he took over the coaching position at the then fourth division club Ionikos Nikea. In 2009 he took over the patronage of the second division Olympiada . In 2011 Ikonomou was assistant coach at Thanasis Skourtopoulos at Ikaros Kallitheas , then at Panionios. As the main person in charge, he took over Ikaros Serron from 2013, and the Livadeia basketball club from 2014. In summer 2015 he returned to Ionikos Nikea as head coach and took over the coaching position of Panionios for the 2016/17 season.
