The Attiki Odos / Αττική Οδóς ( Greek for "Attic road"), also called Aftokinitodromos 6 / Αυτοκινητόδρομος 6 ( Greek for "Highway 6"), is a Greek motorway in the Attica region in the Athens metropolitan area . It connects the new Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos airport east of Athens with Elefsina in the west and runs north of Athens city center. The Attiki Odos is therefore a curved segment-shaped motorway around Athens in the sense of a "northern bypass of Athens". Its total length after the expansion in September 2007 amounts to 65 km.
In addition to the A6 as the main component of the Attiki Odos from Elefsina to the Athens-Airport junction, the Attiki Odos also includes cross bars and smaller connections ( A62 , A64 , A65 ), which are also designed as motorways.
construction
Construction began in 1997 and was completed in 2003. In addition to the connection to the new airport, the Olympic Games , which were held in Athens in 2004, were an important reason for the construction , as the Attiki Odos contributes to an excellent infrastructure and meets the highest international standards .
Before the construction of the Attiki Odos, when traveling from Corinth or the Peloponnese to Northern Greece, at least a partial crossing of downtown Athens was de facto necessary.
Toll
The use of Attiki Odos is subject to tolls between the Roupaki toll station in the west and the Koropi toll station in the east. The prices for a single journey over the entire length of the route vary between € 1.30 for motorcycles and € 11.20 for trucks with four or more axles. The construction of metro line 4 of the Athens metro will be financed by toll revenues from Attiki Odos.
Networking road
The Attiki Odos as the northern bypass of Athens crosses several roads and car traffic routes:
-
A1 "PATHE" ( E 75 )
Patras – Corinth – Athens – Lamia – Larisa– Katerini –Thessaloniki– Evzoni (Macedonian border) -
A65
Ano Liossa (Olympic site) with Aspropyrgos or Egaleo (east bypass Elefsina or Ring Egaleo)
Networking air traffic
There is a direct connection to the Athens international airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" in the east of the Attica peninsula near the town of Spata (via A62).
Networking local public transport
The Doukissis Plakentias exit is next to the railway transfer station of the same name ( Proastiakos and Athens Metro Line 3 Airport - Monastiraki ).
effect
The flow of traffic between the various regions of Attica has been improved, travel times have been shortened and traffic on central roads is to be reduced. This saves an estimated two million liters of fuel every day.
