The Petres Lake ( Greek Λίμνη Πετρών , Límni Petrón (f.sg.)) is a lake in northern Greece in the area of the municipality of Amyndeo , in the foothills of Mount Voras . It belongs to a series of lakes in the Eordea Basin (λεκάνης της Εορδαίας) formed by the Verno , Voras, Siniatsiko and Vermio mountains . Besides the Petres lake, the Vegoritida lake , the Chimaditida lake (Χειμαδίτιδα) and the Zazari lake (Ζάζαρη) belong to this group of lakes.
geography
The lake covers an area of 12.3 km² and is at an altitude of 560 m. The ground plan shows a heart shape shifted to the north. It is fed with the waters of the Chimaditida lake through a canal and gives off water to the Vegoritida itself. With a maximum depth of 6 m, it is one of the deeper lakes in Greece. On the south bank of the lake is the small town Amyndeo , north of the village Petres, which also has an archaeological site from the Hellenistic period. To the west is the village of Agios Panteleimon on the isthmus between Lake Petres and Vegoritida. Amyndeo is a wine-growing area and the Dimosia Epichirisi Ilektrismou hydropower plant is powered by water from the lake.
traffic
Coming from the west, Europastraße 65 ( Ethniki Odos 3 ) bypasses the lake south of Amyndeo. a few kilometers to the west it crosses with the European route 86 ( Ethniki Odos 2 ).
fauna
The lake forms its own ecosystem. The endemic species of Coregonus serves as a food source for dwarf shots , which occur at the lake together with gray and little egrets. The valuable animal population also includes storks and otters . For this reason, the lake was included in the Natura 2000 program together with its neighbors .
