Tanagra ( ancient Greek Τάναγρα or Tanagrē Τανάγρη , modern Greek Τανάγρα ( f. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ taˈnaɣra ]) is a Greek municipality in the prefecture of Boeotia with about 21,000 inhabitants and was an ancient polis of the same name about 5 km from today's place. Tanagra was also the capital of Boeotia in ancient times .

history

In ancient times it was a polis on the Asopos (now Vuriendi ) and was due to the influence of the Thermodon (Laris) brook. The course of the curtain walls can still be seen there today .

Tanagra was one of the oldest members of the Boeotian League and was at times its place of mint . There were two battles around and near Tanagra during the Peloponnesian War , which gave them their name, the first battle of Tanagra (457 BC) (Sparta victorious over Athens) and the second battle of Tanagra (426 BC) (Victory of the Athenians).

Tanagra was still a thriving city in the 6th century . In 1874, magnificent terracotta statuettes were found in the necropolis on the Kokkali hill . The so-called Tanagra figures made the region famous again.

The city-born poet Korinna dedicated a song of praise to the women of her city. Over 2400 years later, the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote a poem called Tanagra . However, it is not inspired by the place itself, but by the ancient works of art found there, especially the terracotta figures made there, the so-called Tanagra figures .

Infrastructure

The districts of Agios Thomas, Oinofyta, Oinoi and Tanagra each have a train station on the Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway line . The Oinoi station is the most important as a branch station for the Oinoi – Chalkida railway line .

Military airfield

The military airfield ( ICAO : LGTG ) is located northeast of Tanagra. The asphalt runway with an orientation of 10/28 is 2,990 m long. The military airfield is at an altitude of 148 m (485 ft) above sea level . World icon

Others

In the Star Trek series Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century , Tanagra is mentioned repeatedly in the episode Darmok (Season 5, Episode 2). There are strong similarities to the real existing Tanagra. In the series, however, it is a fictional "island continent on Shantil III" (a fictional planet).
