The Battle of Tanagra took place during the Peloponnesian War in 426 BC. Between Athens and the troops of Thebes and Tanagras , allied with Sparta .

In 426 BC The Athenian fleet of 60 ships under Nikias , which originally sailed to defeat the island of Melos , landed in the east of Boeotia near Oropos . From there, the 2,000 hoplites they were carrying marched against the city of Tanagra, with further Athenian troops brought in by Hipponikos and Eurymedon by land across the Parnes Mountains, joining them on the way. At Tanagra they achieved a clear victory over the troops of Thebes and Tanagras, but the Athenians withdrew to Attica after the battle .

Two years later, Athens re-launched a similar plan of campaign against Boiotia, but the resulting battle of the Delion ended in a clear defeat for Athens.
