The Asopos ( Greek Ασωπός also Βοιωτικός Ασωπός ( m. Sg. ) Viotikos Asopos ) is a river in central Greece . Its main sources arise in the Lefktra plateau north of the Kithairon . Other significant tributaries come from the Parnitha and the Dervenochori area . The Asopos has a length of 57 km and flows through the communities Aliartos-Thespies , Thiva and Tanagra in Boeotia as well as a smaller area of Oropos in West Attica where it flows into the southern Gulf of Evia at Chalkoutsi .
mythology
Pausanias (9.1.1) writes that Asopos was king and gave his name to the river, while his successor Kithairon gave his name to the mountains and a daughter of the city of Plataea gave her.
The name Oroe, a tributary, is traced back to the name of a daughter of Asopos in Herodotus (9.51.2) and Pausanias (9.4.4). In addition, Pausanias mentions Thespia and Antiope as possible daughters of Asopus.
Publius Papinius Statiuss speaks in his Thebais of the fighter Hypseos, the mortal son of Asopos. He is the leader of the men of Alalkomene, Itone, Midea, Arne , Aulida, Graea, Plataiai, Pleteon, and Anthedon. Hypseos is slain by Kapaneos.
history
The Asopos was the border between Thebes and Plataiai in antiquity . On its bank was 479 BC. Fought the battle of Plataiai .
Industrial waste water pollution
The river suffers from pollution from untreated sewage, which comes from the groundwater, among other things, because various industrial companies dump their sewage, some of them illegally underground. Great efforts have been made to purify the river. The popular movement received support from a letter from US activist Erin Brockovich , who took up the cause. Brokovich was disappointed and supported the lawsuits on her homepage Friends of the Earth with signature campaigns that she directed to the American ambassador to Greece so that he could hand them over to the Greek government. In addition, she turned to the European Parliament at a congress on April 15, 2009 .
