The Greek island of Agathonisi ( Greek Αγαθονήσι [ aɣaθɔˈnisi ] ( n. Sg. )) Is the northernmost inhabited Dodecanese island . Together with several uninhabited small islands, it forms the second smallest municipality in terms of inhabitants ( dimos δήμος) in Greece within the South Aegean region .

geography

Geographical location

The 13.417 km² large island of Agathonisi is located in the eastern Aegean about 18 km west of the coast of Asia Minor . The nearest islands are Samos about 20 km north, Arki 19 km west and Lipsi 22 km southwest.

The extension in west-east direction is 7.5 km, the maximum width in north-south direction is 3.4 km, the narrowest point is 1.6 km. With the exception of the north-west coast, the coastline is strongly structured by numerous bays. The largest bays are on the south coast, in the west Ormos Chochlia (Όρμος Χοχλιά), in the middle the port bay Ormos Agios Georgios (Όρμος Αγίου Γεοργίου) and in the east the likewise deep bay Ormos Poros ( Όρος) Πόρος.

Apart from almost vertical cliffs on the northwest coast, the relief is gentle. Following the longitudinal alignment of the island, a chain of hills rises in the interior of the island with the Kastro (Κάστρο) in the east over the Kleftos (bisλεφτός) to the highest point Dendra (Δ9νδρα) with 209 m in the west. The mountain Styfi (Στυφή) in the southwest reaches 208 m.

The uninhabited islands of Pitta, Strongyli, Praso, Neronisi, Katsaganaki and Katsagani are located clockwise from the north to the east coast, and about 1.8 km off the south coast of Kounelonisi. The sea depth between Agathonisi and Kounelonisi is 81 m, to the other islands no more than 50 m.

nature

Phrygana stands and degraded maquis determine the landscape on Agathonisi. Higher vegetation consists of scattered carob trees and a few olive and fig trees. Bonsai-shaped bushes indicate an overgrazing problem caused by a significant goat population.

Five species of reptiles have been identified from Agathonisi. Besides the two gecko species European fingerless ( Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus ) and cyrtopodion kotschyi ( Mediodactylus kotschyi ) and the Hardun ( Laudakia stellio ), the snake eye lizard Ophisops elegans and the only snake the Caspian whipsnake ( Coluber caspius ).

history

The earliest settlement in the 3rd millennium BC BC document archaeological excavations from 2006 to 2010 at Kastraki. In the Middle Ages, Agathonisi was a base for pirates. From the 19th century the island was increasingly settled from Patmos. The island's ancient name is Gaidaros, the ancient name is Tragea.

local community

The port of Agios Georgios

In contrast to many Greek municipalities that were created by the administrative reform of 2010, the municipality of Agathonisi has existed since 1954. At that time, Agathonisi and the surrounding islands were separated from the municipality of Patmos as an independent rural municipality .

The inhabited places Megalo Chorio ('big village' also Megalo Agathonisi ), Mikro Chorio ('small village' also Mikro Agathonisi ) are not visible from the sea above the port of Ormos Agios Georgios . There is also the port of Agios Georgios (Άγιος Γεώργιος) and in the northeast there is the Katholiko (Καθολικό), which has been uninhabited since the 1960s .

Economy and Transport

The population lives from declining agriculture, fishing (there are now two fish farms) and the increasingly important individual tourism.

The island has regular ferry connections to Samos , Leros and Kalymnos , depending on the season . The small road network is paved and remarkably well developed. The connection to national and international air traffic is via the nearest airport in Samos . There is a helicopter landing pad northeast of Megalo Chorio for emergencies .
