List of former prefectures of Greece
With the Kallikratis program and the corresponding law for the restructuring of the political division of Greece , the administrative level of the Greek prefectures (Ez. Greek νομ Nomς Nomos ) or the corresponding prefectural districts and areas, some of which existed since 1833, became effective from January 1st Abolished in 2011. The following list is based on the situation in 2010. The powers of the prefectures, which had been placed under self-government with the Kapodistrias program of 1997, were transferred to the new municipalities and the now self-governing regions . In addition to the affiliation to the respective region and, if applicable, the super-prefecture, the list also lists information on the area and population of the local authority as well as the number of old urban (Dimi) and rural communities (Kinotites).
