Ierissos ( Greek Ιερισσός ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town on the east coast of the peninsula Halkidiki and administrative seat of the municipality (Dimos) Aristotelis in the northern Greek region of Central Macedonia , which in 2010 from the formerly independent villages Arnea , Panagia and Stagira-Acanthus was formed . Ierissos lies in a plain directly on the coast of the bay of Ierissos, which is a part of the bay of the Strymonic bay (Orfanos bay) . Thessaloniki is about 160 km away in a north-westerly direction. South of Ierissos, about 10 km as the crow flies, lies the border with the autonomous monastic republic of Athos . Together with five smaller villages, Ierissos forms the municipality of the same name. The neighboring towns of Ierissos are Nea Roda, Stratoni and Gomati.

In the area of Ierissos lie the remains of the ancient city of Akanthos . You can find them south of today's settlement and the port.

Kaikis, small boats made only of wood, are still being built in Ierissos

On September 26, 1932 at 8:20 p.m. local time, an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale destroyed Ierissos and the surrounding villages. There was no advance warning from other tremors; Aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.0, 5.7 and 6.2 completed the destruction between September 26 and 29, 1932. The epicenter of the earthquake was 1 km south of the south coast of the Elefthera Peninsula, the northern limit of Ierissos Bay , and 4 km east of Stratoni, which was also destroyed.

In the Greek Civil War from 1946 to 1949, insurgents attacked Ierissos on June 22, 1948 and fought for hours with the police and the army. The insurgents were able to break through the defensive positions of the army and police and briefly occupy the peripheral areas of the village.
