The jumping perch ( Etheostoma ) or goby perch are a genus from the family of the real perch (Percidae). It includes around 140 species . The small, 2.9 to 17 centimeters long fish mostly inhabit fast-flowing waters in North America. The marsh springfish ( Etheostoma fusiforme ) lives in swamps, ponds, and slow-flowing waters in the eastern United States , from Maine to Florida . They live on the ground and have reduced their swim bladder . Because of its size, the genre is increasingly being broken down.

Reproduction

During the spawning season, the territorial males are very colorful. They hide their spawn in the gravel beds of the rivers, under stones or, in the case of the marsh springfish, between aquatic plants.
