history

archeology

In the area of Galatista, below the housing estate, near the village church of St. Parasskevi, there was, as is believed, a town of Anthemous , which ruled the area of the same name. The city was offered by the Macedonian King Amyntas I (540-495) to the tyrant Hippias , son of Peisistratos , who had been driven out of Athens, but he refused this offer.

In 1949 an important marble inscription from the 3rd century BC was found in the northeast of the Galatista district. Discovered.

Recent history

1732 Census

The oldest mention of the area name comes from the end of the 9th century. The large Byzantine tower from the 13th century and two water mills can be found in the settlement.

In 1500 the Turks ruled and Galatista came into the possession of the vizier Ishak Pasha. A little later in this epoch, Galatista belonged to the Mukataa of the 12 Mantemochorion communities, an interest group of mining communities in northern Halkidiki.

In the Greek War of Independence of 1821, Galatista, like other areas of Chalkidike, was destroyed and devastated by the Turks. Later the residents returned and rebuilt the village. Galatista's churches all date from after 1821.

On April 24, 1854, the place was once again the scene of a fight between Greeks and Turks, in which 65 Turks fell victim.

regional customs

The place has three homeland associations that strive to maintain tradition. In addition to a number of festive church holidays, the street festival “of the camel and the bride”, which takes place on January 6th and 7th, should be mentioned. The liberation of a bride from Galatista is shown, who was kidnapped by Turkish soldiers and kidnapped back with a "Trojan camel".
