Anthemoundas ( Greek Ανθεμούντας , ( m. Sg. )); official name Dimotiki Enotita Anthemounda Δημοτική Ενότητα Ανθεμούντα, alternative transcription Anthemountas; Katharevousa Anthemous (Ανθεμούς) is one of the four parishes of the municipality of Polygyros on the Chalkidiki peninsula in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . Its name is derived from the Anthemoundas (or Anthemous) river and its valley. It was created as an independent municipality as part of the Greek local government reform Schedio Kapodistrias in 1997 by amalgamating the previously independent municipalities Galatista , Vavdos and Doumbia . The administrative seat of the municipality was the largest town, Galatista.
Anthemoundas is located in the northwest of the prefecture of Chalkidiki and occupies the southeastern part of the Anthemoundas valley and the mountain ranges to the south and north of it. The valley running from southeast to northwest with the small river of the same name leads to the bay of Thessaloniki, the northwest end of the Thermaic Gulf . The international airport of Thessaloniki , which belongs to the municipality of Thermi in the regional district of Thessaloniki , is located at the mouth of the Anthemoundas . Thermi forms the northern, northwestern and western boundaries of Anthemoundas'. To the north, Anthemoundas borders the municipality of Langadas . The municipality of Polygyros connects to the east and the municipality of Nea Propondida to the south .
The dominant landscape feature of the municipality is the valley of the Anthemoundas (or Anthemous) river in its upper reaches. Its northern limit is formed by the Chortiatis mountain range (1.201 m altitude) and its south-eastern secondary peak Profitis Ilias (946 m altitude), which is also the highest point of the municipality of Anthemoundas and is located immediately north of the town of Galatista. The southern boundary of the Anthemoundas Valley is a mountain range running from west to east with the peaks Kalavros, Kremasmata and Vavdos. The two mountain ranges rejuvenate the Anthemoundas Valley to the east. Both mountain ranges meet about 3 km southwest of Galatista and allow the Anthemoundas river and the parallel national road 16 to the east (Polygyros) to pass on the mountain pass there. The highest village in the municipality is Vavdos, in the vicinity of which extensive mining is carried out.
