Stagira ( Greek Στάγειρα ( n. Pl. )) Is a village in the municipality of Stagira-Akanthos in the municipality of Aristotelis in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . The name of the village refers to the ancient city of Stagira , about 8 km northeast , the hometown of Aristotle .

geography

Stagira is 73 km away from Thessaloniki and forms the entrance to the municipality of Stagira-Akanthos. The village is located in the foothills of the Stratonikos mountain (Στρατονικός / Strebenikos - Στρεμπενίκος / Argirolofos?) At about 500 m above sea level , in the northeasternmost area of the Chalkidiki peninsula. The Ethniki Odos 16 (main road) between Thessaloniki and Ierissos runs through the place, coming from Neochori (Νεοχώρι) from the west and continues through Stratoniki (Στρατονίκη) to Stratoni (Στρατώνι) on the bay of Ierissos . Stagira and Statoniki have almost grown together into one place.

history

The place was formerly called Kazantzi Machalas (Καζαντζή Μαχαλάς) and belonged to the area of the Mantemochorion (Μαντεμοχωρίων). In Byzantine times, it gained a certain wealth by mining ore and was also known as a siderokafsia (blast furnace). Ore mining continued even in Ottoman times. in the 18th century the mines belonged to the monasteries of Athos . From Stagira also originates teacher of the people (Διδάσκαλος του Γένους) Athanasios Stagiritis (Αθανάσιος Σταγειρίτης; 1780-1840), a fierce opponent of Adamantios Korais (Αδαμάντιος Κοραής) and Dimitrios Satagiritis (Δημήτριος Σαταγειρίτης), Army leaders in the Greek Revolution in 1821 and representative of Macedon in the 3rd National Assembly of Epirauros and fourth National Assembly of Argos (Γ 'Εθνοσυνέλευση Επιδαύρου / Δ' Εθνοσυνέλευση Άργους), as commander of the unit Frouras Mendenitsis kai Zitouniou (Φρουράς Μενδενίτσης και Ζητουνίου). The freedom fighter Eleftherios Michail (Ελευθέριος Μιχαήλ) came from the neighboring, now abandoned village of Chorouda (Χωρούδα).

The historic site now displays the statue of Aristotle in a small park. In addition to various ore furnaces, towers (from the 16th century), public baths and the tower of Madem Aga (Μαδέμ Αγά) from the Ottoman era can be visited. The Church of Genesio tis Theotokou (Γενέσιο της Θεοτόκου, "Birth of the Theotokos ") dates from 1814, shortly before the revolution. She celebrates the consecration on September 8th.

Administrative division

With the spin-off from the rural community Isvoros in 1920, the rural community Kazandzi Machalas (Κοινότητα Καζαντζή Μαχαλά) was founded. At the same time, the place Olymbiada was recognized and incorporated. In 1924, Kazandzi Machalas was renamed Stagira. The area of the rural community decreased in 1928 with the separation from Olymbiada. Through the municipal reform in 1997 , Stagira was merged with six other rural municipalities and the municipality of Ierissos to form the municipality of Stagira-Akanthos . This in turn merged with the administrative reform in 2010 in the newly founded Aristotelis community . Since then, Stagira has had the status of a local community.
