Nea Moudania ( Greek Νέα Μουδανιά ( n. Pl. ); Nea Mudanya can also be spelled) is a small town in northern Greece on the Chalkidiki peninsula in the Central Macedonia region . Nea Moudania is located on the west coast of Chalkidiki on the Thermaic Gulf north of the isthmus to the Kassandra peninsula . With around 9,300 inhabitants, Nea Moudania is the largest town in Chalkidiki, ahead of the capital Polygyros and Nea Kallikratia . Nea Moudania is the administrative seat of the municipality of Nea Propondida , the largest municipality in the former prefecture of Chalkidiki .

Nea Moudania was founded in 1922 by Greek refugees from Asia Minor, who came to Chalkidiki as part of the population exchange after the Greco-Turkish War , and was named after the village of Mudanya ( Nea for new ).

Nea Moudania is now a very important fishing port and business location. For several years now, attempts have been made to benefit from tourism on the Chalkidiki peninsula by building new hotel complexes in the vicinity of the city. In the absence of really attractive beaches, people try to find their niche in the upscale wellness area. In addition, Nea Moudania is considered a transport hub. On the one hand, the main roads from Thessaloniki to Nea Potidea ( national road 67 ) and from Nea Moudania to Sithonia , Polygyros and Eastern Chalkidiki ( Ouranoupolis , Ierissos ) cross to the east of Nea Moudania . National road 67 is currently being developed as a motorway from Nea Kallikratia to Nea Potidea , but is currently (as of June 2013) still designated as a national road. Between Nea Potidea and Nea Fokea, the traffic on this road is currently four-lane, although the two directions of travel are in some cases considerably separated and for noise protection reasons, the speed on the more touristy east side of the Kassandra peninsula is limited to 60 km / h. An expansion and rededication to a motorway or expressway is therefore currently not planned. There are no railway connections. The nearest international or domestic airport is that of Thessaloniki . Due to its location, many of the KTEL (local public transport) buses stop in Nea Moudania.
