Triglia ( Greek Τριγλία , ( f. Sg. )); official name Dimotiki Enotita Triglias, (Δημοτική Ενότητα Τριγλίας) is a municipality in the municipality of Nea Propondida in the west of the Chalkidiki peninsula in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . It was created in 1997 as an independent municipality as part of the Greek local government reform Schedio Kapodistrias by amalgamating the previously independent municipalities of Nea Triglia , Nea Plagia , Eleochoria and Petralona . The administrative seat of the municipality was its largest village Nea Triglia, from which the name of the municipality is derived.
The area is in the west of the prefecture of Chalkidiki in the region known as Bottike during antiquity. It extends from the west coast of the Chalkidiki peninsula in a north-east direction to the mountain range south of the Anthemous valley. The highest point in the municipality is Mount Katsika, northeast of the village of Petralona (altitude 542 m). In this mountain is the stalactite cave of Petralona , in the cavities of which the remains of prehistoric humans and the remains of prehistoric animals were found in 1960.
