Junko Ōnishi (musician)

Junko Ōnishi ( Japanese 大西 潤 子 , Ōnishi Junko ; born April 16, 1967 in Jōyō , Kyoto Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz pianist .

Live and act

Ōnishi grew up in Tokyo and had a classical piano training. After studying jazz, she studied for three years at Berklee College of Music in Boston . She then worked in New York with artists such as Betty Carter , Joe Henderson , Kenny Garrett , Phil Woods ( Cool Woods 1999), Shigeharu Mukai and in the Mingus Dynasty . She has also performed with her own bands in clubs such as the Village Vanguard and Sweet Basil . In 1993 she presented her debut album, followed by a series of productions for Blue Note Records in the 1990s . In 1995 Hat Trick was created with Jackie McLean . On her album Baroque ( Verve 2010) she plays both original compositions and standards by Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus . She is currently working in a trio with Yosuke Inoue (double bass) and Eric McPherson (drums), with whom she also appeared in the framework program of the Paris exhibition Jazz en Japon .
