Nicola Danti

Nicola Danti (born September 6, 1966 in Pelago , Province of Florence ) is an Italian politician ( Italia Viva , formerly PD ). He was a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to July 2019 and has been a member of the European Parliament again since September 2019 .

Life

Danti graduated from the University of Florence with a degree in political science in 1993 . Until 2000 he headed a consulting and development company. He is the father of three children.

As a student, Danti, who was a member of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC), was elected to the municipal council of the city of Pontassieve near Florence. From 1995 to 1999 he was the city's deputy mayor. After the DC collapsed, he belonged to the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI), which in 2002 became part of the La Margherita party. From 1999 to 2004 he was again a member of the Pontassieve parish council. From 2002 to 2008 Danti headed the Montagna Fiorentina mountain community . From 2004 to 2009 he was a councilor in his hometown of Pelago. At the same time, he was Matteo Renzi's successor coordinator of La Margherita in the province of Florence until the party merged with the Democratici di Sinistra (Left Democrats) to form the Partito Democratico in 2007 .

In the following years Danti was a member of the PD regional secretariat in Tuscany. He was elected to the Regional Council of Tuscany in 2010, where he headed the Education and Culture Committee until 2014. Danti organized the internal party election campaign of Matteo Renzi in Tuscany in the primary election of the national PD chairman in 2012 (in which Renzi lost).

In the 2014 European elections , Danti was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the constituency of Central Italy . There he belongs to the group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D). Danti was a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection for the legislative period until 2019 and its deputy chairman from 2015-19. He was also the delegate for relations with Brazil, for relations with the Mercosur countries and in the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EUROLAT).

In the 2019 European elections , Danti initially missed entry with 53,435 preferential votes. However, in September 2019 he replaced Roberto Gualtieri , who left the EU Parliament to become Italian finance minister. Danti was then deputy chairman of the delegation for relations with Mercosur, he was also a member of the Committee on International Trade and again delegate for relations with Brazil. On October 20, 2019, he joined the Italia Viva party founded and led by Matteo Renzi . In February 2020 he moved from the social democratic group S&D to the liberal group Renew Europe . As a result, he lost his committee and delegation posts. Instead, he has since been a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and is again delegate for relations with Mercosur and in the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.
