Marcus Henderson Cruikshank

Marcus Henderson Cruikshank (born December 12, 1826 in Autauga County , Alabama , † October 10, 1881 in Talladega , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician .

Career

Marcus Henderson Cruikshank, son of Lovedy Campbell McNeil and George Patterson Cruikshank, was born in Autauga County in 1826. Nothing is known about his youth. He studied law and began practicing law after receiving his license. His student days were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . Cruikshank first joined the Whig Party and, after its collapse, the Constitutional Union Party . He was mayor of Talladega County . In 1863, Cruikshank was elected to the Second Confederate Congress for the fourth constituency of Alabama . In his election he suggested the Confederate Congressman Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry (1825-1903). Cruikshank took up his post on February 18, 1864 and held it until the end of the Confederation in 1865. He died in an accident in 1881 when he was thrown from his horse while riding. His body was then interred in Clark Hill Cemetery in Talladega.
