Teresa Bellanova (2018)

Teresa Bellanova (born August 17, 1958 in Ceglie Messapica , Brindisi province ) is an Italian trade unionist and politician ( DS , PD , Italia Viva ). She has been Senator since 2018 and Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry in the Conte II cabinet since September 2019 .

Life and political career

Bellanova graduated from middle school after 8th grade and started working as an agricultural laborer when she was 14. At that time, Ceglie was one of the centers for recruiting agricultural black workers in Apulia who were used for low wages in olive, wine and almond growing.

In view of the poor working conditions, she soon joined the communist-oriented trade union CGIL and was elected to the local chamber of labor at the age of 15. She and her union group organized roadblocks to stop the delivery trucks that were being used to take the unskilled workers to the fields. At the age of 20 she became regional coordinator for women in the Federbraccianti (the branch union for agricultural workers within the CGIL) of Apulia. As a union official, she moved to the management of FILTEA (CGIL textile workers' union) in 1996 and was elected to the union's national secretariat in 2000, where she was responsible for the Mezzogiorno (southern Italy).

Bellanova was politically involved with the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats), which emerged in 1991 from the Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI). She was promoted by the former prime minister and party chairman Massimo D'Alema , from 2005 she was a member of the national party council. In the 2006 general election, she was elected to the House of Representatives of the Italian Parliament on the list of the center-left alliance L'Ulivo . There she was a member of the Working Committee and the Agriculture Committee. The DS went into 2007 in the Partito Democratico (PD). D'Alema suggested Bellanova as one of the “wise men” who worked out the program of the new center-left rallying party. After the parliamentary elections in 2013, she became secretary of the PD group.

In the Renzi cabinet , she was State Secretary in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs from February 2014 to January 2016 (under Minister Giuliano Poletti ). She then moved to the Ministry of Economic Development as Vice Minister . She also held this position in the Gentiloni cabinet until June 2018. She was elected to the Italian Senate in the 2018 parliamentary election. There she was a representative of the opposition on the Committee on Industry, Trade and Tourism. On September 5, 2019, she was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the Conte II cabinet, a coalition government made up of the PD and the Five Star Movement . Two weeks later she left the PD together with the former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and helped found the Italia Viva party . But she kept her ministerial office.
