Elena Bonetti (born April 12, 1974 in Asola , Province of Mantua ) is an Italian mathematician and politician ( PD , Italia Viva ). Since September 5, 2019, she has been Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family in the Conte II cabinet .

Career

Bonetti studied mathematics at the University of Pavia , where she graduated in 1997. She then moved to the University of Milan , where she completed her Ph.D. - finished his studies and from then on belonged to the academic staff of the university. She rose to associate professor with a focus on partial differential equations and mathematical modeling for applied sciences .

Bonetti was involved in the Catholic scout movement AGESCI and in Catholic youth work. She also advocated equality for homosexuals and supported a corresponding petition to the Italian state by Andrea Gallo .

Elena Bonetti was elected to the board of the Partito Democratico in 2017 , and party leader Matteo Renzi appointed her national leader of the party for youth and education. She ran for the camera dei deputati for the first time in the 2018 parliamentary elections , but was not one of the elected MPs . On September 5, 2019, she was accepted into the second cabinet of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte as Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family . Less than two weeks after being appointed minister, she joined the Italia Viva party, newly founded by former PD chairman and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi .
