Don Andrea Gallo (born July 18, 1928 in Genoa , Italy ; † May 22, 2013 there ) was an Italian Catholic priest and Christian social reformer . He founded the community of San Benedetto al Porto in Genoa and is known in Italy as the priest of the street .

Life

Andrea Gallo was already attracted to the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) as a teenager and entered their novitiate in Varazze in 1948 . He then attended a grammar school in Rome and studied philosophy. In 1953 , at his request, his order sent him to São Paulo , Brazil , where, in addition to missionary work, he continued to study theology. Due to the political situation in Brazil, he returned to Italy a year later, where he completed his theology studies in Ivrea and was finally ordained a priest on July 1, 1959 .

The following year, Gallo became a chaplain on the Nave Scuola della Garaventa , a training ship for young people who had committed criminal offenses and were difficult to educate. There he tried to introduce a new approach to education, which should replace the previous repressive methods with a pedagogy based on trust and freedom. The young people accepted this new concept and got involved in the partial self-administration offered to them. Criticism of Gallo's work came from his order, which in 1963 relieved him of responsibility for this project and transferred him. Thereupon Gallo left the Salesians and was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Genoa .

Cardinal Siri , the archbishop of Genoa at that time, first sent him to the island of Capraia to work as a prison chaplain. Two months later, however, he was appointed second priest of the Carmine parish in Genoa , where he served until 1970. In Genoa, Gallo focused his work on helping the poor and the marginalized. This work, combined with his clear criticism of the political and ecclesiastical establishment, brought Gallo the accusation of being a "communist" and in 1970, at the instigation of the Italian Bishops' Conference, led to the order that Cardinal Siri was again forcibly transferred to the prison of Capraia. Even a large protest movement in Carmine in favor of Don Gallos could not change this decision.

Don Gallo refused to obey this forced transfer and was instead accepted into his parish by the pastor of San Benedetto al Porto , Don Federico Rebora. There Don Gallo founded the San Benedetto al porto community , which is dedicated to working with the poor and the marginalized across the region. In addition, Don Gallo was involved in the Italian peace movement and in a movement for the legalization of soft drugs (together with Vasco Rossi and Piero Pelù ).

On June 27, 2009 Don Gallo on has Genova Pride Day 2009 participated, where he criticized the attitude of the Catholic Church on sexuality and especially against homosexuals and on 15 August 2011, he was as gay Personality of the Year of gay.it excellent. In November 2010 the book by Don Gallo and Loris Mazzetti Sono venuto per servire (I came to serve) was published, which received much attention in Italy .

Don Gallo also participated in the first solo album by Cisco , a former singer with the Modena City Ramblers .
