Fabienne Keller (born October 20, 1959 in Sélestat , Alsace ) is a French politician ( UDF , UMP , Agir ). She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 . She was mayor of Strasbourg from 2001 to 2008 and a member of the French Senate from 2005 to 2019 .

Life

Keller studied at the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole nationale du génie rural, des eaux et des forêts and acquired in Berkeley the title Master of Arts in Economics . Professionally, she worked in ministries and in banking.

In 1991, Keller joined the civil union pour la démocratie française (UDF). From 1992 to 2001 she was a member of the General Council of the Bas-Rhin department , and from 1998 to 2004 Vice-President of the Regional Council of Alsace . In the 1999 European elections she ran on the UDF list of François Bayrou , and in 2002 she was a member of the European Parliament for a short time .

In 2001, Keller became mayor of Strasbourg as the successor to Catherine Trautmann . In 2002, she joined the newly founded center-right collection party Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP). In 2004 she was elected to the French Senate to represent Bas-Rhin . After the election had been declared invalid by the Constitutional Council , it succeeded in re-entering the Senate in the new elections that became necessary in 2005. In 2008 she lost in the Strasbourg local elections against Roland Ries from the Parti socialiste . Since then she has been the opposition leader on the city council.

In 2014 she was re-elected to the Senate, where she represented the UMP, which was renamed Les Républicains in 2015 . In the Republican area code for the 2017 presidential election , she supported Alain Juppé , who was defeated by François Fillon . Keller then took a public stand against Fillon, who was involved in an affair over the alleged fictitious employment of his wife Penelope at state expense. In November 2017, Keller founded the group Agir - la droite constructive ("Action - the constructive right") under the leadership of Franck Riester, together with other moderate members of Les Républicains, who were more likely to support the policies of President Emmanuel Macron . Since then she has been a vice chairwoman of Agir. In February 2018 she finally left Les Républicains. To avoid a double mandate , she renounced her Senate seat in June 2019.

For the 2019 European elections , she stood as a candidate for the Renaissance list , which was formed by Macron's La République En Marche , Agir and other smaller parties in the center. She is a member of the liberal Renew Europe group in the European Parliament , a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs , a delegate for relations with the Mashreq countries and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean .
