Roland Ries (born January 11, 1945 in Niederlauterbach in Alsace ) is a French politician ( PS ) and former mayor of Strasbourg .

Life

Roland Ries was born in Niederlauterbach in northern Alsace in early 1945. He spent his school days in Strasbourg, where he also began studying to become a teacher. In 1968 he received his diploma from the University of Strasbourg and then worked as a teacher for several years.

In 1974 he joined the Socialist Party ( French Parti socialiste , PS) and was elected to the Strasbourg city council in 1983.

From 1989 to 1997 he was the first deputy mayor and vice-president of the Strasbourg city association (the political association of the agglomeration of Strasbourg). In this position he also directed the construction of the first two lines of the Strasbourg tram .

From 1997 to 2000 he finally held the post of mayor of Strasbourg and the president of the city association, after Catherine Trautmann (PS), the incumbent at the time, was appointed Minister of Culture of France. After her return, he gave his office back to Catherine Trautmann, who, however, lost to Fabienne Keller (UDF) in the local elections in March 2001 . Ries then belonged to the opposition in the city council from 2001 to 2008 .

In 2004, Ries was elected to the French Senate as a representative of the Bas-Rhin department and was a member of this until 2014.

Ries ran as a candidate in the mayoral elections in early 2008 and was re-elected as mayor of Strasbourg on March 16, 2008 with almost 60% of the votes cast. He left the post of president of the city association to Jacques Bigot (PS), the mayor of Illkirch-Graffenstaden . During his inauguration, Ries advocated the European orientation of Strasbourg and the further development of the Strasbourg-Ortenau Eurodistrict , of which he has served as its first President since February 5, 2010.
