Irina Stephanie von Wiese and Kaiserswaldau , in Great Britain mostly Irina von Wiese (born September 11, 1967 in Cologne ) is a German-British lawyer and politician of the Liberal Democrats . She was a member of the European Parliament from 2019 to January 31, 2020 .

Life

Irina von Wiese comes from the original Silesian noble family von Wiese and Kaiserswaldau . She is a granddaughter of Leopold von Wiese . Her grandmother, Leopold von Wieses third wife Nathalie Garetzeloff, came from Georgia and came to Weimar as a refugee in 1923 .

She studied law at the University of Munich and obtained a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School in 1994 . She did part of her legal clerkship at the EU Commission and in the administration of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state parliament . She was admitted to the German bar in 1996. In the same year she moved to the UK , where she was approved as a solicitor for England and Wales in 1998 . In London she worked as Antitrust Director for the GSM Association .

She has German and British citizenship .

politics

Irina von Wiese's interest in European politics was aroused during her time at Harvard by her lecturer at the time, Shirley Williams . She was initially involved in London at the local level for the Liberal Democrats. She was also nominated by these as a candidate for the Hammersmith constituency and for the 2020 London Assembly elections . She was involved in the Remain Opposition against the United Kingdom's exit from the EU .

In the European elections in the United Kingdom in 2019 , in which the Liberal Democrats were the strongest party in the European constituency of London with 27.2%, they won one of three seats for the Liberal Democrats. It belonged to the Renew Europe group.

She was vice-chair of the subcommittee on human rights .
