Hilde Vautmans

Hilde Vautmans (born May 2, 1972 in Sint-Truiden ) is a Belgian politician of the liberal party Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD). Since January 1, 2015, she has been a successor in the European Parliament, and in the 2019 European elections she was directly elected to Parliament.

Life

Education and professional career

Hilde Vautmans was born on May 2, 1972 in Sint-Truiden in the Belgian province of Limburg. She is a niece of the former Senator Valère Vautmans (Open VLD). After graduating from school, Vautmanns studied sociology and criminology at the Catholic University of Leuven. From 1996 to 1999 she was Parliamentary Assistant to Senators Valère Vautmans, Stef Goris and Guy Verhofstadt , from 1999 to 2000 she worked in the office of Minister Rik Daems and from 2000 to 2003 she worked in the office of Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.

Entry into Belgian federal politics

In the 2003 election to the Belgian Chamber of Deputies , she was elected with 16,488 preferential votes. Her focus was on national defense, transport and infrastructure, sects, the European Union, foreign policy, human rights and the emancipation of minorities, health care, youth, development aid and the fight against crime. She remained a member of parliament until 2010. From 2009 to 2010 she was chairman of the Open VLD parliamentary group in the House of Representatives.

In the 2010 election to the Belgian Chamber of Deputies, she was not directly elected to parliament. Within the Open-VLD it was agreed that from the end of 2012 she would become a co-opted senator instead of Guido De Padt , but this did not happen. From 2011 to 2014 she was then party secretary of the Open VLD parliamentary group in the chamber. At the end of 2011 Vautmans was elected president of Open VLD Vrouwen, the women's movement of Open VLD, and she held the office until 2015. She was also Political Secretary from 2004 to 2008, National Vice President from 2008 to 2009, and International Secretary of Open VLD from 2008 to 2014.

Engagement in local politics

In addition to her work as a politician in the Chamber of Deputies, Vautmans is also active at the local level. From 2000 to 2002 she was city councilor in Wellen , from 2006 to 2012 in Hasselt and since 2013 in Sint-Truiden . In Hasselt she was chairwoman of the municipal council from 2006 to 2011 and in Sint-Truiden she has been a lay judge since 2013.

Election to the European Parliament

For the European elections in 2014 , she was nominated second on her party's list of successors. After Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck left the European Parliament at the end of 2014, Vautmans moved up and became a member of the European Parliament on January 1, 2015. There she joined the ALDE parliamentary group , for which she was a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defense in the eighth legislative period (2014-2019) . She was also a deputy member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the special committee for the EU's pesticide approval process . In the legislative Vautmanns was rapporteur ( rapporteur) on three reports.

For the 2019 European elections , her party nominated her to second place on the list behind Guy Verhofstadt. The Open VLD lost votes and gained only two seats, compared to three in the previous election; Vautmans moved in straight away. Verhofstadt and Vautmans joined the newly formed group Renew Europe , the successor to the previous ALDE group. For the group, Vautmans is again a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the ninth legislative period (2019-2024). She is also a deputy member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .
