Pär Anders Holmgren (born October 24, 1964 in Gävle ) is a Swedish meteorologist , writer , moderator and politician ( Miljöpartiet ). Holmgren gained notoriety primarily as a television meteorologist for the Swedish state television SVT . Since the late 1990s, he has also been involved as a politician, particularly in the field of climate change. In the 2019 European elections he won a mandate for the Miljöpartiet and has been a member of the ninth European Parliament since then .

Life

education and profession

Pär Holmgren was born on October 24, 1964 in Gävle, but grew up further south in Uppsala . After graduating from school, Holmgren completed an officer training course in the armed forces and served for several years as a meteorologist and officer with a master's degree. After his time in the Air Force, he researched and taught at Uppsala University , where he received his licentiate in 1993.

Pär Holmgren started as a presenter on ABC regional news in 1988 while doing his PhD at Uppsala University. From 1993 he started working full-time for the state television broadcaster. From the mid-1990s to October 2007, Holmgren was in charge of SVT weather news. In the late 1990s, Holmgren became increasingly concerned with the topic of climate change and began to give popular science lectures on the topic. Even with his employer SVT he dealt regularly with the issue, including in the program meteorological - mer än bara väder in 2003. Political commitment

In December 2018, Pär Holmgren was presented as one of the Swedish Greens' candidates for the European Parliament elections in 2019. The party nominated him for second place on the list behind Alice Bah Kuhnke . In an interview, he explained the step into politics with his involvement in the climate problem: “The situation is very acute. From an EU perspective it will be the last legislature in which it is possible to develop a very clear plan for the transition. "

In the European elections , the Swedish Greens won two of the 21 Swedish mandates (two fewer than in the 2014 European elections ). With this, Pär Holmgren also moved into the EU Parliament and became a member of the Greens / EFA group together with Alice Bah Kuhnke. For the group he is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety . He is an alternate member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development .
