Göran Hägglund (born January 27, 1959 in Degerfors ) is a Swedish politician , former party leader of the Kristdemokraterna and former Minister for Health and Social Affairs in the government under Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt .

Hägglund began his political career in the Christian Democratic youth organization. Since 1978 he has been the full-time ombudsman of the Christian Democratic Party. In 1982 he was elected to the Jönköping City Council and stayed there for a period until 1986. After the Reichstag election in 1985 , he became the parliamentary secretary of the Christian Democrats, who appointed Alf Svensson as a member.

In 1988 he left his job and worked for an insurance company until he was elected to the Reichstag in the 1991 election. In the Reichstag he was chairman of the Christian Democrats parliamentary group from 1991 to 2002, and in 2003 he was elected the party's second deputy chairman. For a long time, Hägglund was seen as the desired successor to long-time party leader Svensson. After Svensson's resignation in 2004, however, he had two strong opponents, Deputy Party Chairman Maria Larsson and former Communications Minister Mats Odell , who could count on greater support from the party organization. Both withdrew their applications, however, so that Hägglund was elected as the new chairman on April 3, 2004, with no opposing candidates.

With the joint electoral alliance Allianz for Sweden , the bourgeois camp under the leadership of Fredrik Reinfeldt won the 2006 election . Hägglund was appointed Minister for Health and Social Affairs on October 6, 2006. He held this office until the change of government after the 2014 election .

In January 2015, Hägglund announced his resignation as party chairman to enable the party to be renewed. On April 25, 2015, the Christian Democrats' congress elected Ebba Busch as the new chairman.

Hägglund grew up in the Pentecostal movement , but is now a member of the Church of Sweden . He is married and has two children.
