Susan Waffa-Ogoo

Susan Waffa-Ogoo (born October 4, 1960 in Bathurst, now Banjul ) is a Gambian politician .

Life

After attending school from 1967 to 1978, Susan Waffa-Ogoo studied at the University of Ghana from 1982 to 1983 . She spent 1983 to 1987 at Loughborough University , where she studied librarianship and English literature. Previously, from 1978 to 1979 she was a teacher and librarian at St. Joseph's High School in Gambia. She then made a career as a librarian at Gambia College until 1994, when she entered the civil service.

Susan Waffa-Ogoo was the longest serving minister in President Yahya Jammeh's cabinet. From 1994, after the coup of Lieutenant Jammeh, she headed the Ministry of Tourism and Culture ( Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture ). From 2000 to 2004 she was Minister for Fisheries, Natural Resources and the Environment. On September 15, 2004, the tourism department was returned to her.

As part of her work as Minister of Tourism, she has promoted her country and presented her country's culture on several visits abroad and at tourism fairs. Through her endeavors, she had achieved that a television commercial was shown on CNN International , in which the Gambian tourism is advertised. She was also instrumental in developing the two-year Roots Homecoming Festival .

On October 25, 2006, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, she was transferred to trade, industry and commerce, which she held until Jammeh surprisingly dismissed her on February 20. Abdou Kolley became his successor on February 24, 2007 .

In March 2008 and April 2008 she was appointed ambassador and represented Gambia in India . From April 21, 2008, she was the permanent representative to the United Nations in New York . From December 1, 2012 she was Foreign Minister.

Susan Waffa-Ogoo is married with two children.
